I'll start with the top layer and use the randomized patterns to get a sense of rhythm with the hats and percs, then I'll bring in the foundation with kicks and snares. If I'm starting from scratch, I'll usually load up two instances of XO, one for the top layer (hats, perc, cymbal, etc) and a bottom one (Kick, Snare/Clap). I have Battery 4 & Maschine, Captain Beat, and not to mention Logic's stock drum machine designer, but XO has completely changed the way I go about programming my drums. Thank you for the write up!
